SEO Got You Found. AEO Gets You Chosen.

17 July 2026 · 4 min read · Shaun, Founder

Quick question: when you last needed a plumber, an accountant, or a web developer — did you scroll through ten blue links, or did you just ask ChatGPT?

If you're honest, it's probably shifting toward the second one. And that shift is the whole story.

SEO got you found. AEO gets you chosen.

For twenty years, the game was ranking on Google's first page. That still matters — but it's no longer the finish line. Google's own AI Overviews now answer a large and fast-growing share of searches directly on the results page, so the person searching never has to click through to a website at all. Independent trackers put the number anywhere from roughly a quarter to well over half of Google searches, depending on the query type — and it's rising every quarter.

At the same time, more people are skipping Google altogether and asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini directly. Recent research shows a growing share of consumers now turn to AI chatbots for exactly the kind of local, "who should I use for this" recommendations that used to be a Google Maps search.

Being ranked #1 on Google is no longer a reliable predictor of being the answer an AI gives someone.

Here's the part that should worry every small business owner

Studies looking at thousands of queries have found that a large majority of businesses cited by ChatGPT and similar tools don't even appear on Google's first page. The two systems are pulling from different signals — mentions, structured data, third-party citations, consistent listings — not just backlinks and keywords.

In plain terms: you can be doing SEO right and still be completely absent from the conversation happening on AI platforms right now, today, about businesses like yours.

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is how you fix that

AEO is the practice of structuring your business's online presence — your listings, your schema markup, your citations across the web — so AI systems can find you, trust you, and recommend you as the answer, not just rank you as a link. It's not a replacement for SEO. It's the next layer on top of it, and the businesses moving on it now have a real first-mover advantage, because most of their competitors haven't started.

This is exactly what we built the Ubuntu Logic AI Listing service for

We handle the unglamorous but critical groundwork that determines whether AI platforms cite your business:

It's part of the same flat-rate, no-quoting model Ubuntu Logic runs on everything else: no drawn-out proposals, no confusing tech jargon, just a request in and a properly built AI-ready presence out.

If your customers are asking, make sure you're the answer.

If your business isn't showing up when people ask AI for a recommendation, someone else is showing up instead. Submit a request and let's find out where you currently stand.
